The Prophet’s (saas) patience

Throughout the period of his mission, the Prophet Muhammad (saas) experienced all manner of difficulty. Deniers and polytheists, from among his own people, insulted him most terribly, even calling him a magician or a madman. Others wanted to kill him and even schemed to do so. Despite all that, the Prophet (saas) tried to teach people of all backgrounds and cultures about the Qur'an, and therefore about proper morality and good behavior.

As Allah revealed in the verses of the Qur'an, some people had not the slightest idea of the basics of good manners, for which reason it never entered their minds that they might appall someone who possessed superior morality. The Prophet (saas) displayed the greatest patience in this circumstances, turning to Allah and asking for His help in all situations and encouraging believers to patience and submission.

In many verses in the Qur'an, Allah advises the Prophet (saas) to be patient despite the words of unbelievers:

So be patient in the face of what they say and glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before it sets. (Surah Qaf: 39)

Do not be grieved by what they say. All might belongs to Allah. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Surah Yunus: 65)

We know that your breast is constricted by what they say. (Surat al-Hijr: 97)

Perhaps you are leaving aside part of what has been revealed to you and your breast is constricted by this because they say, "Why has treasure not been sent down to him or an angel not accompanied him?" You are only a warner and Allah is Guardian over all things. (Surah Hud: 12)

Believers must remember the kind of things Allah's Messenger (saas) was patient for, and take him as a model when dealing with their own difficulties. Those who despair at the slightest problem, who are unable to bear the smallest objection, who stop preaching the religion of Allah, or who lose hope when their business dealings go wrong, must be aware that such behavior is incompatible with Allah's holy book and the sayings and deeds of the Prophet (saas). Believers must always be patient, take Allah as their helper and give thanks to Him, adopt the superior morality of the Prophet (saas), and hope for the mercy, compassion and Paradise of our Lord.

There were people with varying characters and ideas that surrounded the Prophet (saas). Throughout his life, however, he showed an interest in each and every one, warned them about their mistakes and failings, and tried to educate them in all matters, from cleanliness to matters of faith. That compassionate, tolerant, understanding and patient attitude of his was the means by which many peoples' hearts warmed to Islam and developed a genuine love for the Prophet (saas). Allah describes this pleasing attitude adopted by the Prophet (saas) towards those around him in the Qur'an:

It is a mercy from Allah that you were gentle with them. If you had been rough or hard of heart, they would have scattered from around you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them… (Surah Al ‘Imran: 159)

In another verse, Allah told the Prophet (saas) how he should behave towards those around him:

We know best what they say. You are not a dictator over them. So remind, with the Qur'an, whoever fears My Threat. (Surah Qaf: 45)

The Prophet (saas) never pressured those around him to accept the religion, nor imposed conditions on them. Instead he always used the pleasantest ways to tell them about it.

He always supported the community of the faithful with his strong conscience, and was a benefactor to them at all times. On account of these traits, the Prophet (saas) is described in many verses as "your companion." (Surah Saba': 46: Surat an-Najm: 2, Surat at-Takwir: 22).

Those believers who were able to comprehend the conscientiousness of the Prophet (saas) regarded him as closer to them than all others, and humbled themselves towards him. In one verse, Allah states:

The Prophet has closer ties to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers… (Surat al-Ahzab: 6) Imam Ghazali, the great Islamic scholar, summed up the Prophet (saas)'s treatment of those around him in light of the information found in the hadiths:

"... Everyone thought that the Prophet honoured him more. Whoever came to him could see his face.
... He used to call his companions by their surnames with honour and he used to give one surname who had no surname.
... He was very affectionate and kind in dealing with the people.
... Nobody could speak loudly in his assembly." 1

The Prophet (saas)'s human love, kind thought and compassion, which turned those around him to true religion and warmed their hearts to faith, is that superior morality which all Muslims should seek to reproduce. (For further reading about the attributes of the Prophet (saas),

The Prophet’s (saas) call to religion

The Prophet (saas) spent all his life, once the Qur'an had been revealed to him, calling people to the religion and guiding them to the true path. In one verse, Allah tells the Prophet (saas) how he should address people:

Say: "This is my way. I call to Allah with inner sight, I and all who follow me. Glory be to Allah! I am not one of those who associate others with Him." (Surah Yusuf: 108)

The Prophet (saas) encountered a number of difficulties when warning people and teaching them about the Qur'an and true morality. Since not everyone was on the true path, people made life difficult for the Prophet (saas), out of jealousy, hatred and envy. Some were slow to understand his words and dragged their feet when they did so, some behaved hypocritically, saying that they believed his words when they really did not. The Prophet (saas) continued to explain the religion with great determination, paying no heed to all those obstacles. Such people's attitudes are revealed in a verse:

… You believe in all the Books. When they meet you, they say, "We believe." But when they leave they bite their fingers out of rage against you. Say, "Die in your rage." Allah knows what your hearts contain. (Surah Al ‘Imran: 119)

Another verse discusses the Prophet (saas)'s determination in the face of those who opposed him:

Those to whom We gave the Book rejoice at what has been sent down to you but some of the parties refuse to acknowledge part of it. Say: "I have only been ordered to worship Allah and not to associate anything with Him. I summon to Him and to Him I will return." (Surat ar-Ra‘d: 36)

The Prophet (saas) continued to warn those who would not believe, and to use the most effective way of talking about the religion, in the hope they would find faith and abandon their hatred of him and his religion. Allah describes the attitude displayed by those people in the face of what he had to say in Surat an-Nisa':

Do you not see those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you, still desiring to turn to a satanic source for judgement in spite of being ordered to reject it? Satan wants to misguide them far away. When they are told, "Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites turning away from you completely. (Surat an-Nisa': 60-61)

Despite the two-faced behavior of those who opposed him, the Prophet (saas) spoke to them in terms that would enable them to see the truth and which would work on their consciences. One verse reads:

Allah knows what is in such people's hearts so turn away from them and warn them and speak to them with words that take effect. (Surat an-Nisa': 63)

It was of course a heavy responsibility to give advice to his enemies, to show them the error of their ways and to call them to the true path. Yet, for someone who, like the Prophet (saas), has put his trust in Allah, who knows that faith is a gift from Him, and fears Allah alone, and not anyone else, Allah will provide assistance and support.

In several verses of the Qur'an, Allah reveals that He has sent messengers in order to turn those who have strayed back to the true path, to purify them, and to teach them the holy verses. As we have seen above, throughout his life, the Prophet (saas) persevered in the responsibility that Allah had laid on him with great patience, fortitude and determination. Even in the final sermon that he gave, very shortly before dying, he continued to teach and instruct Muslims.

Allah sets out these beautiful responsibilities in a number of verses:

For this We sent a Messenger to you from among you to recite Our Signs to you and purify you and teach you the Book and Wisdom and teach you things you did not know before. (Surat al-Baqara: 151)

Allah showed great kindness to the believers when He sent a Messenger to them from among themselves to recite His Signs to them and purify them and teach them the Book and Wisdom, even though before that they were clearly misguided. (Surah Al ‘Imran: 164)

In one verse, Allah describes the Prophet (saas)'s advice and warnings as "things that will bring one to life":

You who believe! Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when He calls you to what will bring you to life! Know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that you will be gathered to Him. (Surat al-Anfal: 24)

That is why the Prophet (saas)'s advice and exhortations are unlike those of anyone else. Abiding by these warnings is a means of salvation in this world and the next. Each of the Prophet (saas)'s exhortations are founded on wisdom that will save people from evil, cruelty, pessimism and suffering. Since all his advice is inspired and assured by Allah, a sincere Muslim will surrender himself to them and find faith.

The words of the Prophet (saas) that have come down to us contain the excellent advice he gave to the faithful. One example is the advice he gave to his companion Muadh. It is reported that he spoke thus:

"O Muadh, I advise you: fear Allah, speak the truth, fulfil promise, pay up trust, give up breach of trust, save your neighbour, show kindness to orphans, be modest in talk, spread peace, do good deeds, stick to faith, earn knowledge about the Qur'an, love the next world, fear rendering of accounts...

O Muadh, I forbid you: Don't tell a truthful man liar, don't follow any sin, don't disobey a just judge, and don't create disorder in land.

O Muadh, I give you instruction: Fear Allah while passing by each stone, tree, and heaps of earth. Make repentance anew after committing any sin. Repent secretly for secret sin and openly for open sin." 1

That is how the Prophet (saas) educated those close to him and Muslims, and called on them to have good character. (For further reading about the attributes of the Prophet (saas)

The exemplary justice of the Prophet (saas)

In the Qur'an, Allah commands believers to "Be upholders of justice, bearing witness for Allah alone, even against yourselves or your parents and relatives. Whether they are rich or poor, Allah is well able to look after them. Do not follow your own desires and deviate from the truth..." (Surat an-Nisa': 135). With the rules he imposed on Muslims, his just and tolerant attitude towards those of other religions, languages, races and tribes, and his way of not discriminating between rich and poor, but treating everybody equally, Allah's Messenger (saas) is a great example to all of mankind. Allah says this to His Prophet (saas) in one verse:
They are people who listen to lies and consume ill-gotten gains. If they come to you, you can either judge between them or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they cannot harm you in any way. But if you do judge, judge between them justly. Allah loves the just. (Surat al-Ma'ida: 42)
The Prophet (saas) abided by Allah's commands, even with such difficult people, and never made any concessions in his implementation of justice. He became an example for all times with the words, "My Lord has commanded justice…" (Surat al-A‘raf: 29).
A number of incidents testify to the Prophet (saas)'s justice. He lived in a place where people of different religions, languages, races and tribes all co-existed. It was very difficult for those societies to live together in peace and security, and to check those who sought to spread dissension. One group could grow aggressive towards and even attack another over the slightest word or action. Yet, the justice of the Prophet (saas) was a source of peace and security for those other communities, just as much as it was for Muslims. During the time of the Prophet (saas), Christians, Jews and pagans were all treated equally. The Prophet (saas) abided by the verse "There is no compulsion where the religion is concerned…" (Surat al-Baqara: 256), explaining the true religion to everyone, but leaving them free to make up their own minds.
In another verse, Allah revealed to the Prophet (saas) the kind of justice and and conciliation he needed to adopt towards those of other religions:
So call and go straight as you have been ordered to. Do not follow their whims and desires but say, "I believe in a Book sent down by Allah and I am ordered to be just between you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. We have our actions and you have your actions. There is no debate between us and you. Allah will gather us all together. He is our final destination." (Surat ash-Shura: 15)
This noble attitude of the Prophet (saas), being in total harmony with the morality of the Qur'an, should be taken as an example of how members of different religions today should be treated.
The Prophet (saas)'s justice brought about understanding between people of different races. In many of his addresses, even in his final sermon, the Prophet (saas) stated that superiority lay not in race but in godliness as Allah states in the verse:
Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other. The noblest among you in Allah's sight is that one of you who best performs his duty. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Surat al-Hujurat: 13)
Two hadiths report the Prophet (saas) as saying:
"You are sons of Adam, and Adam came from dust. Let the people cease to boast about their ancestors." (1)
"These genealogies of yours are not a reason to revile anyone. You are all children of Adam. No one has any superiority over another except in religion and taqwa (godliness)." (2)
During his final sermon, the Prophet (saas) called on Muslims in these terms:
"There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over an Arab; nor for white over the black nor for the black over the white except in piety. Verily the noblest among you is he who is the most pious." (3)
The agreement made with the Christians of Najran in the south of the Arabian Peninsula was another fine example of the justice of the Prophet (saas). One of the articles in the agreement reads:
"The lives of the people of Najran and its surrounding area, their religion, their land, property, cattle and those of them who are present or absent, their messengers and their places of worship are under the protection of Allah and guardianship of His Prophet." (4)
The Compact of Medina, signed by the Muslim immigrants from Mecca, the indigenous Muslims of Medina and the Jews of Medina is another important example of justice. As a result of this constitution, which established justice between communities with differing beliefs and ensured the protection of their various interests, long years of enmity were brought to an end. One of the most outstanding features of the treaty is the freedom of belief it established. The relevant article reads:
"The Jews of Banu 'Awf are one nation with the Muslims; the Jews have their religion and the Muslims have theirs…" (5)
Article 16 of the treaty reads: "The Jew who follows us is surely entitled to our support and the same equal rights as any one of us. He shall not be wronged nor his enemy be assisted." (6) The Prophet (saas)'s companions remained true to that article in the treaty, even after his death, and even practiced it with regard to Berbers, Buddhists, Brahmans and people of other beliefs.
One of the main reasons why the golden age of Islam was one of peace and security was the Prophet (saas)'s just attitude, itself a reflection of Qur'anic morality.
The justice of the Prophet (saas) also awoke feelings of confidence in non-Muslims, and many, including polytheists, asked to be taken under his protection. Allah revealed the following request from the polytheists in the Qur'an, and also told the Prophet (saas) of the attitude he should adopt towards such people:
If any of the idolators ask you for protection, give them protection until they have heard the words of Allah. Then convey them to a place where they are safe. That is because they are a people who do not know. How could any of the idolators possibly have a treaty with Allah and with His Messenger, except for those you made a treaty with at the Masjid al-Haram? As long as they are straight with you, be straight with them. Allah loves those who do their duty. (Surat at-Tawba: 6-7)
In our day, the only solution to the fighting and conflict going on all over the world is to adopt the morality of the Qur'an, and, like the Prophet (saas), never to depart from the path of justice, making no distinction between different religions, languages, or races. The Prophet (saas)'s human love, kind thought and compassion, which turned those around him to true religion and warmed their hearts to faith, is that superior morality which all Muslims should seek to reproduce. "He who ANGERS you, conquers you."

We all may have come across many situations where our patience has been tested. It could have been due to someone arguing with us, insulting us, mistreating us, not listening to us, not following our directions, etc etc the list could be endless. How we, as Muslims, react under this situation would become a representation of what Islam is to the Non-Muslims. If we shout, curse, swear, hit, or break things around us, then we are wrongly portraying the image of an ideal Muslim.

We should follow the guidance given in the Qur'an and Hadith in regards to how we should manage our ANGER - which is a common human emotion:

"The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better (i.e. Allâh orders the faithful believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to excuse those who treat them badly), then verily! he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend. (34) But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient - and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of happiness in the Hereafter i.e. Paradise and of a high moral character) in this world. (35) And if an evil whisper from Shaitân (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam]) (from doing good), then seek refuge in Allâh. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower." (The Qur'an: 41.34-36)

"And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious (Allâh) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness. "(The Qur'an: 25.63)

Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] passed by some people who were wrestling. He [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] asked, "What is this?" They said: "So-and-so is the strongest, he can beat anybody." Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] said, "Shall I not tell you who is even stronger then him? The man who, when he is mistreated by another, controls his anger, has defeated his own shaytaan and the shaytaan of the one who made him angry." (Reported by al-Bazzaar, and Ibn Hijr said its isnaad is saheeh. Al-Fath, 10/519)

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah [RadhiAllahu Anhu] that a man said to Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam]: “Advise me.” He [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] said: “Do not get angry.” He repeated his question several times and He [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] said: “Do not get angry.” (Bukhaari #5765)

‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib [RadhiAllahu Anhu] said: It may be known whether a person is really patient at the time of anger. The beginning of anger is madness and the end of it is regret, and anger cannot be justified by offering a humble apology. Calamities may come because of anger. It was said to al-Shu’bi: Why is a person who is quick to get angry also quick to calm down, and the one who is slow to get angry is slow to clam down. He said: Because anger is like fire; that which is easier to start is easier to extinguish.

So, how should we [Muslims] manage our ANGER as per the guidance from the Qur'an and Hadith (not in any particular order):

1.Remember Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala)

“And remember your Lord when you forget” [The Qur'an: 18.24]
Usually in times of anger, we tend to forget Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala), therefore forcing ourselves to remember Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) at this time will Insha'Allah remind us of the guidance given for managing anger.

2.Seek refuge from Shaytan; Turn away; Show forgiveness not revenge

“Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish (i.e. don't punish them). (199) And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaitân (Satan) then seek refuge with Allâh. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (200) Verily, those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2), when an evil thought comes to them from Shaitân (Satan), they remember (Allâh), and (indeed) they then see (aright). (201)"(The Qur'an: 7:199-201)
Say "Audhu billahi minash shaytan nir-rajeem." - Translation: I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast. Turn around and walk away if you have to and come back only when your anger is under control.

3.Change positions

It was narrated that Abu Dharr [RadhiAllahu Anhu] said: Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] said to us: “If one of you gets angry when he is standing, let him sit down, and if that does not take away his anger, then let him lie down.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4782; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

4. Be Silent

Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] said: "If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent." (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 1/329; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 693, 4027).
"This is because in most cases, the angry person loses self control and could utter words of kufr (from which we seek refuge with Allaah), or curses, or the word of divorce (talaaq) which would destroy his home, or words of slander which would bring him the enmity and hatred of others. So, in short, keeping silent is the solution which helps one to avoid all that."

5. Extinguish it with Water

AbuWa'il al-Qass said: We entered upon Urwah ibn Muhammad ibn as-Sa'di. A man spoke to him and made him angry. So he stood and performed ablution; he then returned and performed ablution, and said: My father told me on the authority of my grandfather Atiyyah who reported Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] as saying: Anger comes from the devil, the devil was created of fire, and fire is extinguished only with water; so when one of you becomes angry, he should perform ablution. (Abu Dawud 4766)
May I suggest drinking water as well to cool down

6. Imagine the Respect you gain in this World and the Reward you gain in the HereAfter

Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] said: “Allah will not increase a person who forgives others except in honour.” (Muslim, 2588)
Remind yourself of how much respect you can gain by controling your anger and handling the situation with tolerance as compared to the respect you can lose by yelling, cursing, swearing, hitting, etc.

There are so many more Ayat and Ahadith in regards to anger, however I will end this article here since it has already gotten so long and I do not wish the reader to skip over such precious guidance.

Lastly, however, I want to leave you with a quote from one of the literary figures:
"Beware of the pride of anger, for it leads to the humiliation of apology."

JazakAllahu Khayran for reading till the end. Insha'Allah May we all follow this guidance given in the Qur'an and Hadith related to anger in our daily life.

and Allâh (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) knows best.

Economic crisis before the coming of the Mahdi

... From Abu Bashir: Imam Jaffari Sadiq (as) said:
THE PEOPLE WILL GO HUNGRY FOR A YEAR BEFORE THE COMING OF THE QAIM, AND A FEAR OF BEING SLAIN WILL ENFOLD THEM; they will suffer losses of goods, lives and assets. Allah writes this clearly in His book. He then added this verse: “We will test you with a certain amount of fear and hunger and loss of wealth and life and fruits. But give good news to the steadfast.”
(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani p. 297)

In a hadith narrated by Naim ibn Hammad from ibn Masud, the period preceding the appearance of the Mahdi is described as “the time when TRADE and roads are CUT and strife increases.” The hadith goes on to report that this will come to an end in the time of the Mahdi:
"… We came to seek that person (the Mahdi) BY WHOSE HAND STRIFE WILL BE EXTINGUISHED. CONSTANTINOPLE (ISTANBUL) WILL BE CAPTURED THROUGH HIM. (In other words, the Mahdi will spiritually capture hearts and establish a huge cultural intellectual impact.) We recognize him by his name, and his mother and father’s names, and his army…"

(Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 52)

The Prophet Sulayman (as), Dhu’l-Qarnayn and the Mahdi … similarities between three holy individuals, enlightening the end times

The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn were two holy individuals who scrupulously maintained Allah’s bounds, showed great efforts to have Islamic moral values prevail on Earth, and who received an enormous dominion over this world in return.

The world dominion is not the only feature in common seen in the days of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn. In the hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh), Muslims are given the great glad tidings that the dominion that will be experienced in the time of the Mahdi will be similar to that of those other two periods.

The Prophet Sulayman (as) was a holy prophet descended from the line of the Prophet Nuh and to whom the true path and great knowledge were imparted from the Presence of Allah. Like his father, the Prophet Dawud (as), he was sent to the Israelites as a Messenger of Allah. Allah supported him with great authority and unique wealth, jinns and birds, and blessed him with powerful armies and superior knowledge. Throughout his life, he ruled with a great justice over the lands he lived and brought different societies together for his service, with his qualifications as a great ruler and judge.

As with The Prophet Sulayman (as), Allah also gave Dhu’l-Qarnayn “power and authority on the earth.”(Surat Al-Kahf, 84) Dhu’l-Qarnayn also ruled a very powerful and world renowned state. It appears from verses that there were no problems such as economic difficulties, rebellions or revolts in the lands of Prophet Dhu’l-Qarnayn, and that his rule was very sound, rational and strong.

When the times of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn are examined, the first thing that draws the attention is how, by the will of Allah, religious moral values prevailed. However, apart from this global dominion, the two periods share another feature in common. Many of the hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh) stress that the worldly dominion that will be obtained in the time of the Mahdi will be very similar to that in the days of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn:

“The Mahdi will rule over the world just like Dhu’l-Qarnayn and Sulayman.” (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 29)

When the verses of the Qur’an that illuminate the days of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn are considered within the framework of this point of view, it is seen that each reveals important signs regarding the End Times and the Golden Age. Indeed, the developments in the field of science and technology and the progress in economic and social life in the End Times bear a very close similarity to many descriptions in the story of The Prophet Sulayman (as). These descriptions and the hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh) are very wise accounts that are means whereby believers can examine world events from a wider perspective and broaden their horizons.

The End Times and the Golden Age

The hadiths reported from our Prophet (pbuh) provide detailed information about the portents of the End Times and the Golden Age. When events taking place in the present day are compared to these portents, it can be seen that there are many indications that the period we are living in is the End Times and that also impart the glad tidings of the coming of the Golden Age.

The beginning of the End Times has been described in hadiths as an environment in which strife multiplies, wars and conflicts increase, there is terrible moral degeneration in the world and in which people turn away from religious moral values. In the period reported, there will be natural disasters all over the world, poverty will increase as never before, the crime rate will rise to a great extent, and murders and killings will follow one after another. However, this is only the first stage of the End Times; in the second stage, Allah will free mankind from this climate of chaos by means of the Mahdi.

These things have of course been experienced many times over the course of history. There have been many wars, natural disasters or earthquakes in the history of mankind. Moral degeneration has been seen in different communities in all ages, and poverty and hunger have plagued the world for hundreds of years. What makes the portents of the End Times different from all these is the fact that these portents are all coming about in a particular time and in the same period, one after the other, and in various special forms indicated in the hadiths. The good news also needs to be imparted that this great chaos described in the hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh) is only temporary and will come to an end with the beginning of the Golden Age.

The Golden Age will be a period when wars and conflicts come to an end, atheistic ideologies that have brought great disasters onto the mankind are consigned to the oubliette of history, when there will be abundance and fertility all over the world, and when there is true justice. Islamic moral values will spread across the world and people will flow into the stream of those values. As we have already emphasized, this great dominion of Islamic Morality is described in some of the hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh) as being similar to the world dominion of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn. In his famous work “Letters,” the great Islamic scholar Imam Rabbani also included the hadiths informing how the Mahdi will help Islamic morality prevail on Earth just like in the times of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn. One of these hadiths reads:

A little more than 1,000 years pass over the passing of Allah's Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) from this life, a time comes and the true Islam rises from its own ranks and unites with the truth of the Ka`bah. (Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, vol. 1, p. 470)

As revealed in the hadith of our Prophet (pbuh), the two individuals known as the ones who helped Islamic morality prevail all over the Earth were The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn. By Allah’s will, the third Muslim will be the Mahdi announced in the hadith. These features seen in The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn will also be observed in the Mahdi.

Wise Similarities between the Times of The Prophet Sulayman (as), Dhu’l-Qarnayn and the Mahdi

The Prophet Sulayman and the Prophet Dhu’l-Qarneyn ruled the whole world with Islamic moral values and possessed very powerful armies. This aspect of their age bears great similarities to the Golden Age.

The Golden Age will be a time when people will convert to Islam in great numbers, while ideologies that deny Allah will wither away and Islam will be practiced as it was in the time of our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Some of the hadiths describe the Golden Age as follows:

The Mahdi will own the entire world. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 10)

The Mahdi will invade all the places between East and West. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 56)

The Rare and Nobel Knowledge Possessed by the Mahdi and the Knowledge Bestowed on The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn

Almighty Allah bestowed various forms of knowledge on The Prophet Sulayman (as). By the will of Allah, he ruled over djinns and devils, spoke with birds, and was able to hear ants talking among themselves. The wind and copper were also given under his command. Each of these is a miraculous feature that distinguishes The Prophet Sulayman (as) from other human beings.

The Qur’an reveals the fact about Dhu’l-Qarnayn, as well: “Our knowledge encompasses all that happened to him” (Surat Al-Kahf) It is clear from this verse that Dhu’l-Qarnayn was one of His servants whom Allah bestowed knowledge. Like these two holy individuals, the Mahdi will also possess very special knowledge.

In his work Mevzuatu’l ulum (11/246) Taskopruluzade Ahmet Efendi has recorded how the Mahdi will have ilm-e-jafr (the art of divination through numbers). Another hadith provides the following information about the Mahdi:

He is called the Mahdi because he is given guidance for a situation unknown to anyone. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 77)

Muhyiddin Arabi describes how, just like The Prophet Sulayman (as), the Mahdi will understand the language of animals and have dominion over the djinn:

The Mahdi is a person who speaks the language of birds and other animals. Therefore, his justice will manifest itself over all people and jinns. (Allamah Muhaqqiq Ash-Sharif Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rasul, Al-Isaatu li Asrat'is-saat, p. 188)

Developments in the Fields of Science and Technology during the Golden Age

As revealed in verses of the Qur’an, in the times of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn there were great advances in science and technology, advances that were quite unfamiliar for the time. For example, The Prophet Sulayman (as)’s use of molten copper (Surah Saba 12), the floor of the palace being made out of transparent glass (Surat Al-Naml 44), or Dhu’l-Qarnayn making use of a different technology to construct a wall between two mountains in order to prevent the strife of Yajuj and Majuj (Surat Al-Kahf, 96) are just a few instances of the advanced technology employed in these two periods.

When we examine those hadiths that describe the Golden Age we encounter a very similar situation.

There will be major advances in the fields of science, technology, communications and medicine in the Golden Age. Each new development will be placed at the service of all mankind and the lives of people all over the world will thus be improved. One of the signs in the hadiths on this subject is:

The end of a man's whip will speak to him.(Tirmidhi)

It is very likely that this hadith is referring to the mobile telephone, the most widespread means of communication in the present day. (Allah knows the truth.)

Another important sign in the hadiths regarding technological progress is:

People will reap 700 measures of wheat for every one they sow ... People will throw down a few handfuls of seeds and reap 700 handfuls ... Although much rain will fall, none will be wasted. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 24)

This hadith may be referring to modern agriculture, carried out by machines that are the products of technology. As we know, it used to be a very difficult process to sow the fields and gather in the harvest. However, advances in technology have also led to enormous progress in agriculture, and the production of new machinery has made life easier in terms of both sowing and harvesting. In addition, seed improvement has led to great advances in production. As technology advances, brand new techniques are being developed and productivity is increasing.

By Allah’s will, there will also be considerable advances in the time of the Mahdi, and the lives of people engaged in agriculture will thus be very much easier.

The Importance Given to Love of Animals

The Qur’an reveals that The Prophet Sulayman (as) set aside time in order to pat his horse (Surah Sad 31-32) and that his moral values were so superior that he would not even tread on an ant, thus drawing attention to his loving and affectionate attitude towards animals.

Love of animals will also be encouraged in the Golden Age. We are told in the hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh) that at this time all animals will easily be able to be approached, patted and ruled. Some of the hadiths on this subject read:

Snakes will get on with children, and cows with lions … (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 64)

Another noteworthy similarity between the Golden Age and the time of The Prophet Sulayman (as) is, as seen from the hadiths, the sovereignty over animals. In the same way that The Prophet Sulayman (as) ruled over various living things, birds in particular, there will be a similar sovereignty over them in the Golden Age, and even dangerous animals will do people no harm.

Their Support for Peace and Preference for Diplomacy

The Prophet Sulayman (as) displayed a tolerant, forgiving and peaceful attitude towards neighboring countries. He preferred to resolve problems by diplomatic and fair ways. A very advanced culture arose in the time of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and he confirmed his rule by way of diplomacy, art and culture.

Dhu’l-Qarnayn was known as a “person who prevents strife and disorder on Earth” by the peoples around him, and was a leader who brought peace and calm to people. This aspect of the ages of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn look strikingly similar to the Golden Age.

In the Golden Age people will become Muslims of their own will, and Islamic morality will rule the world without the need for any war. This age is described as follows in those hadiths:

No one will be woken up from their sleep or have a bleeding nose. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 42)

The Mahdi will follow the way of the Prophet. He will not wake up a sleeping person or shed blood. (Allamah Muhaqqiq Ash-Sharif Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rasul, Al-Isaatu li Asrat'is-saat, p. 163)

As stated in the hadiths, the Mahdi will use peaceful means to make Islamic moral values prevail on Earth and will avoid war and violence. The path taken by the Mahdi and a global cultural advance will be a means whereby people turn to Islamic moral values. By the will of Allah, the following verses depict this time: (Nasr Suresi 1-3)

“ When Allah’s help and victory have arrived and you have seen people entering Allah’s deen in droves, then glorify your Lord’s praise and ask His forgiveness. He is the Ever-Returning.” ( Surat An-Nasr, 1-3)

Their determination and Swift Action on urging people to Religious Morality

The rational and quick decisions taken by The Prophet Sulayman (as) stand for a role model for all true believers. The letter he wrote (Surat An-Naml 29) to call the people of Sheba to the faith is an important piece of evidence that demonstrates the power of his message. The Qur’an gives us the following information about the content of that letter:

“It is from Sulayman and says: "In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful. Do not rise up against me, but come to me in submission." ( Surat An-Naml, 30-31)

The style employed by The Prophet Sulayman (as) is very clear and effective. Its sincere, determined and unequivocal style make it clear that it comes from someone with great power and sovereignty. The queen of Sheba and the notables around her were highly influenced by the letter.

In addition, the way that The Prophet Sulayman (as) brought the queen of Sheba to the throne by means of someone possessed of knowledge (Surat An-Naml 38) reveals the importance he attached to the taking of swift decisions.

Prophet Dhu'l-Qarnayn's decision to build a strong wall-so strong that it would last until Doomsday-against the attacks of the Yajuj and Majuj tribes show his power and intelligence.Like The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn, the Mahdi will also be known for his intelligence and foresight.

During the Golden Age, by the will of Allah, people will turn to Islam in floods, there will be wide-ranging, sweeping activities towards this way. All nations, one after another, will adopt Islamic morality, and opposing ideologies will be wiped away through quick and lasting actions and all cruel systems will be consigned to the darkness of history. The great Islamic scholar Muhyiddin Arabi says this on the subject:

Allah will give so much power to the Mahdi. He will remove cruelty from the world overnight, religion will be established, and Islam will be revived. The Mahdi will restore its lost value to it, and it will come to life after its apparent demise ... Ignorant people, misers and cowards alike, will be very knowledgeable, generous, and brave. ... They will practice religion as in the time of Prophet Muhammad (saas).... (Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, Al-Futuhat al-Makkia, p. 66; Allamah Muhaqqiq Ash-Sharif Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rasul, Al-Isaatu li Asrat'is-saat, p. 186)

Great Importance Placed on Construction

The importance attached to building by The Prophet Sulayman (as) is emphasized in a number of verses. He caused castles, statues, towers and furnaces to be made, using djinns and devils who were expert in the field. (Surah Sad, 37; Surah Saba, 13) People who saw his magnificent palace, the queen of Sheba in particular, was highly impressed by it. (Surat Al-Naml, 44) The technique employed in the construction of the wall erected by Dhu’l-Qarnayn was so powerful that it could only be brought down by the will of Allah. (Surat Al-Kahf, 98)

The hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh) also reveal that great importance will be attached to construction during the Golden Age. In addition to peace and tranquility, a developed civilization will be brought in this period. One of these hadiths reads:

The Mahdi will rule the world just like The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn.(Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi p. 29)

There are four kings on Earth in total. Two are from the believers and two from the unbelievers. The believers are Sulayman and Dhu’l-Qarnayn. The unbelievers are Nemrud and Buhtannasir. ONE FROM MY PEOPLE WILL RULE THE WORLD AS THE FIFTH. In other words, the Mahdi. (Letters of Rabbani, 2/251)

He (the Mahdi)

Will be the king of all the world. (Book of Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 10)

The Mahdi will conquer all places between east and west. (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 56)

He (the Mahdi) is one who is confirmed as knowing the languages of birds and all animals. Thus his justice will be agreed by all human beings and djinns
(Portents of Doomsday, Berzenci, p. 188)

He will be known as the Mahdi since he serves as a guide to a hidden state of affairs known to nobody. (Book of Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 77)

... A person will speak to the whip in his hand... (Portents of Doomsday, Barzanji, p. 152)

When people sow one measure of wheat they will reap seven hundred measures, a man will throw down a few seeds and receive back seven hundred handfuls of harvest … Although there will be much rain, not a drop will be wasted.(Portents of Doomsday, Barzanji, p. 164)

...A person will tell his sheep and animals, “Let us go and graze,” and they will go, and although they pass through the middle of the crops they will consume not one ear, and snakes and scorpions shall harm no-one, and savage animals will wait before people’s doors and harm no-one... (Portents of Doomsday, Barzanji, p. 245)

In his time nobody shall be woken out of sleep and nobody’s nose will bleed. (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 42)

The Mahdi will follow the path of the Prophet, will not waken anyone who sleeps and will cause no blood to flow. (Portents of Doomsday, Barzanji, p. 163)

Allah will give him (the Mahdi) such power that he will eliminate oppression and evil in one night, re-establish the religion, reanimate Islam, make it valuable once again after it had been accorded no importance, resurrect it after its death … In his century a man who is ignorant, parsimonious and afraid will immediately become learned, generous and brave … The religion will be practiced just as it was in the time of our Prophet (saas) … (Muhyiddin ibn Arabi, Conquests of Mecca, Bab 66, Portents of Doomsday, p. 186)

The Mahdi will work for the building of Constantinople and other countries. (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 40)

The Mahdi will emerge from among my community, and Allah will send him to make people wealthy. The community will be blessed, animals will eat and drink in plenty, the earth will give up its fruits … (Book of Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 15)

USING WEALTH AND SPLENDOR FOR ISLAM'S BENEFIT AND ALLAH'S GOOD PLEASURE

The Prophet Sulayman (as) used the wealth he possessed in the best way possible in order to spread the Islamic morality revealed by Allah. He called on the people in the countries he conquered to believe in and submit to Allah. The letter of invitation to Islam he sent to the country of Sheba is important evidence on this subject. As can be seen from the verse: “‘The power my Lord has granted me is better than that. Just give me a strong helping hand and I will build a solid barrier between you and them.” (Surat Al-Kahf, 95), Dhu’l-Qarnayn also, as a blessing from Allah, possessed stable power. He also used his power in order to prevent disorder on Earth.

During the Golden Age people will attain great wealth, well-being and peace. The Mahdi will employ all his wealth in order to make religious moral values prevail on Earth, and will take proper moral values and peace as his foundation in the countries he conquers. His unparalleled practices will soften people's hearts and lead them to Islamic morality. Thus, within a very short time this morality will rule the world. One of the hadiths on this subject reads:

Before pledging their allegiance to him, people will flock to where he resides, and everyone who goes there will enjoy the divine plenty. (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 25)

Fertility and Abundance During the Golden Age

It can be seen from verses that there was great wealth in the time of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and that people lived lives of well-being. The Prophet Sulayman (as)’s palace was truly magnificent, he had great armies and ruled over all the world.

With its plenty and abundance the Golden Age will be quite similar to the period of The Prophet Sulayman (as). People will be given everything their heart desires, in large quantities and without even measuring. Even the birds in the air will be delighted with the Mahdi’s caliphate. Our Prophet (pbuh) has given very detailed descriptions of the plenty, abundance and well-being of the Golden Age. One of these reads: In that time, the people of the Earth and sky, all wild animals, birds and even the fish in the sea will rejoice at his caliphate. In his time, even flowing rivers will increase their waters. (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 31)

Justice and Tolerance in the Golden Age

It is revealed in verses of the Qur’an that The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn favored tolerance, forgiveness and peace. Dhu’l-Qarnayn adopted fairness as his principle in dealing with the societies he encountered and invited those societies to what was easy for them. (Surat Al Kahf, 88) He treated them with justice and offered them the solutions to the problems. He helped the communities that sought his aid with no expectation of reward. There is no doubt that this is all a consequence of living by the moral values enjoined by our Almighty Lord.

The Prophet Sulayman (as) also ruled with justice throughout his reign. When the Mahdi appears he, just like The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn, will ensure the dominion of Islamic morality through cultural activities, will employ diplomacy, attach importance to art and esthetics, will win the love of all with his justice and honesty, and will build a peaceful world. He will make the richness of the world equally be shared by all, and poverty and misery will vanish from the Earth. Some hadiths on this subject run as follows:

After his coming, the world filled with oppression and vice will overflow with justice. (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 20)

He (the Mahdi) will own the world and fill it, which was filled with oppression and cruelty before him, with justice. Whoever of you lives to see him, go to him, even by crawling over snow, and join him. Because he is the Mahdi. (Book of Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 14)

Ebu Said Hudri reports from the Prophet (pbuh):

“The followers of the Mahdi will shelter behind him like honey bees shelter behind the queen (where they find safety and security), and he will fill the Earth with justice and honesty.” (Book of Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, p. 30)

Glad Tidings for Muslims Concerning the End Times

The world dominion established during the days of The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn are great glad tidings for all Muslims. Because, as it is emphasized throughout this article, these stories contain important signs referring to the End Times.

Muslims who scrupulously adhere to the bounds set by Allah, who sincerely strive to bring Islamic morality to prevail across the world and who are indefatigable in the face of all difficulties will certainly be victorious at all times in history. Allah will be alongside them with His help and support.

The Prophet Sulayman (as) and Dhu’l-Qarnayn were rewarded for the above attributes with powerful dominion in this world (and, of course, with many other spiritual blessings from Allah). That same dominion will also arise in the End Times, through the Mahdi. As our Prophet (pbuh) has told us, he will perform all services and, by the will of Allah, help Islamic morality prevail on Earth. This is Allah’s promise to the faithful:

“It is He Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the Deen of Truth to exalt it over every other deen, though the idolators hate it.” (Surat As-Saff, 9)

...He will bring down rain, bring forth the Earth’s abundance, and my community will enjoy a never before seen well-being in his time. (Book of Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times p. 9)

The Prophet (saas) has given a great deal of information about both the age in which he lived and the future of the Islamic world, and as a miracle from our Lord these have all come true. Many of the reports given by the Prophet Muhammad (saas) about the future of the Islamic world concern the End Times. Some of the events he spoke of and which we are witnessing coming about in our own time are increased earthquakes, drought, extraordinary celestial phenomena, great wars, a rise in anarchy and chaos, reduced security, and uprisings. Our Prophet (saas) tells us that in the End Times Muslims and believers will suffer various difficulties, but that after that period, with the second coming of Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the appearance of the Mahdi, an age of light will be experienced. The Prophet (saas) has supplied many details of the portents prior to the coming of Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the Mahdi and has described the joys to be experienced when these blessed individuals appear.

The hadiths supply many signs of the appearance of the Dajjal and events that will take place at that time. Some of these, which are in all likelihood taking place in our day are:

Cloud Seeding

As an-Nawwas ibn Sam'an reported, the Prophet (saas) said:

“He would then give command to the sky and there would be rainfall upon the earth ...”
(Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 7015)

It is reported in the above hadith that in the End Times there will be means of causing rainfall when so desired. These methods are actually employed today. The technique known as cloud seeding is applied as follows:

“Seeding of clouds requires that they contain supercooled liquid water—that is, liquid water colder than zero degrees Celsius. Introduction of a substance such as silver iodide, which has a crystalline structure similar to that of ice, will induce freezing (heterogeneous nucleation). Dry ice [frozen carbon dioxide] or propane expansion cools the air to such an extent that ice crystals can nucleate spontaneously from the vapor phase. ... In mid-latitude clouds, the usual seeding strategy has been predicated upon the fact that the equilibrium vapor pressure is lower over water than over ice. When ice particles form in supercooled clouds, this fact allows the ice particles to grow at the expense of liquid droplets. If there is sufficient growth, the particles become heavy enough to fall as snow (or, if melting occurs, rain) from clouds that otherwise would produce no precipitation. This process is known as "static" seeding. Seeding of warm-season or tropical cumuliform (convective) clouds seeks to exploit the latent heat released by freezing. This strategy of "dynamic" seeding assumes that the additional latent heat adds buoyancy, strengthens updrafts, ensures more low-level convergence, and ultimately causes rapid growth of properly selected clouds. Cloud seeding chemicals may be dispersed by aircraft or by dispersion devices located on the ground (generators).” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_seeding)

One place in which this technique is often employed is Kansas. The National Geographic website provides the following information on the subject:

“In Kansas, clouds sometimes promise rain and fail to deliver—or produce crop-damaging hail. To coax moisture from the clouds, the Western Kansas Weather Modification Program sends out its planes. Wing-borne burners produce a silver iodide smoke, which rides updrafts into the sub-zero heart of certain storm clouds. At that altitude, the silver iodide particles provide nuclei around which cloud water can freeze. When they're heavy enough, the grains of ice fall—melting into rain on the way down. In theory, the strategy not only increases rainfall but also keeps moisture from being swept high into clouds and forming hail. …” (http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0506/feature5/gallery5.html)

The rain bomb is a technology that has been developed over the last 60 years. Today, some 24 countries, including the USA, Israel, Canada, Russia, Thailand, Morocco and Australia employ the technique to increase rainfall. (http://www.aksam.com.tr/haber.asp?a=77081,10) The pictures below show the silver iodine and some of the cloud seeding devices employed today:

Increase in Milk Production

The events that we are told will take place in the End Times in those hadiths of the Prophet (saas) that have come down to the present day have taken place in our own time by means of advances in technology. One of the events reported in the hadiths as a portent of the appearance of the Dajjal is an increase in milk yield. The progress that has been in livestock rearing in our time has given rise to this increase in yield reported in the hadith. And Allah knows best.

An-Nawwas ibn Sam'an reported that the Prophet (saas) said:

“He would come to the people and invite them (to a wrong religion) and they would affirm their faith in him and respond to him. He would then give command to the sky and there would be rainfall upon the earth and it would grow crops. Then in the evening, their posturing animals would come to them with their humps very high and their udders full of milk and their flanks stretched.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 7015)

The artificial insemination of the animal population, embryo transfer and the raising of animal quality by means of high productivity stock, which began being implemented only recently in our own time, have led to a huge rise in milk production in all countries, particularly Holland and Belgium. In Holland, for example, the daily average milk yield from a single cow has risen to 35 liters. Some cows are even known to produce as much as 53 liters. (http://arsiv.zaman.com.tr/2001/10/30/ekonomi/ekonomidevam.htm)

The Treasure Detector

The hadiths describing the End Times also tell us of many portents, together with a variety of other information and developments. One of these is a hadith describing the emergence and attributes of the Dajjal. This hadith tells of treasure hidden beneath a building as the Dajjal passes by it:

“He would then walk through the waste land and say to it: Bring forth your treasures, and the treasures would come out…” (Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 7015; reported by an-Nawwas ibn Sam'an)

As we know, detectors that can find metals under the ground and that are capable of distinguishing between metallic and non-metallic compounds are in wide use today. Thanks to these, it can immediately be established whether or not there is any metal buried beneath a building or under the ground. These detectors, which make it easy to find buried metals such as gold, silver, copper and bronze, are frequently employed in engineering, construction and by the military, and by others for treasure hunting.

The above hadith may well be referring to the use of such a device. That would explain the detection of treasure beneath the building and its subsequent extraction. And Allah knows best.

Trawl Nets

One of his (Dajjal’s) astonishing deeds is this: He will enter the sea three times a day; one of his arms is long. With his long arm he will lean on the bottom of the sea, and with his other hand he will sweep up and catch what he wishes from among the fishes in the deeps... (Reported by Abu Nuaym [ra]). (Signs of Qiyamah, 10th edition, p. 216)

It is indicated in the hadiths of the Prophet (saas) that in the End Times Dajjal will “reach down the bottom of the sea and catch the fishes of the deeps.” The “trawl nets” used today in catching fish fully match this description given in the hadith. And Allah knows best.

Fishing with trawl nets is also known as “multi-species fishery” because a large number of species are caught at the same time. Trawl nets, a kind of drag net, are used in seabed and mid-water fishing. These nets, which scour the seabed with steel cables, trap all the fish they encounter.

Trawl nets, resemble large, cone-shaped, wide-mouthed (30 meters or so wide) bags. Wooden struts are used to keep the mouth open when the net is first cast into the sea. These are connected to the trawler boat by steel cables. Bottom trawling is generally used in places where the seabed is largely flat. Dropped from the trawler boat, the trawl net is dragged along behind it for some 1.5 to 3 hours and scours the seabed, catching all the fish it encounters. It is then raised using a winch and the fish inside unloaded on deck. Once the fish have been cleaned and washed, they are packed in ice in the ship’s hold. On some very large and highly advanced trawlers, the fish are loaded into freezing apparatus once they have been cleaned. These boats are able to remain at sea and therefore fish for more prolonged periods.

Greater Life Expectancy

Our Prophet (saws) has provided considerable information about the period in which he lived and also the future of the Islamic world, and all his reports have turned out to be true, as a miracle from Allah. A large part of what the Prophet Muhammed (saws) tells us about the future of the Islamic world concerns phenomena to do with the End Times. Accounts given by our Prophet (saws) and that have been witnessed to come true in our own day are that there will be an increase in earthquakes during the End Times, that there will be drought, that extraordinary phenomena will be observed in the skies, that there will be great wars, an increase in chaos and anarchy, a decline in security and also revolutions.

Our Prophet (saws) has told us that Muslims and believers will be subjected to various difficulties in the End Times, that the Prophet ‘Isa (as) will return to Earth in the wake of this troubled time, and that with the appearance of the Mahdi all believers can expect an age of felicity. Our Prophet (saws) has also provided detailed descriptions of the signs that will be seen before the coming of the Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the Mahdi, as well as of the joys that the coming of these holy personages will bring.
As reported in the hadith, one of the portents of the End Times and the appearance of the blessed Mahdi is “increased life expectancy” during this holy period. Some of the hadith and accounts regarding this are as follows:

Life expectancy will increase in his (the Mahdi’s) time. This increased life expectancy also means that he (the Mahdi) will be long-lived. (p. 184)

In his time (the blessed Mahdi's) ... Life spans will grow longer...
(Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi'alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 43)

Life spans will grow longer...
(Al-Suyuti, Portents of Doomsday, Death and Resurrection, p. 1699, p. 179)

There has been a relative increase in life expectancy in recent times, but none to match the increase observed in the 21st century. Research has revealed that human life expectancy will rise by 50% this century and that there will be many more people living to see their 100th birthdays in the years to come.

Increases in life expectancy
1800s: average life expectancy 24
1900s: average life expectancy 48
2000s: average life expectancy 63

The results of research into genetics and gene technology at the end of the 20th and early 21st centuries show that “life expectancies will be prolonged.” For example, a report in National Geographic magazine stated that the formula needed for a longer and healthier life would soon be available in pharmacies. Scientists who say they have identified the gene for long life state that the average life may soon be around 100 years. Another study reports that children born around now will live to be approximately 125 or 150. Many researchers state that “there will be nothing out of the ordinary in people aged 150” and that in the 21st century life expectancies will increased beyond all comparison with the past.

The fact this phenomenon, imparted by our Prophet 1400 years or so ago, coming about so clearly and manifestly without doubt represents very glad tidings for believers. Just like this prediction, the other reports imparted by our Prophet (saws) will also all come true, and mankind will witness many holy phenomena during the 21st century. By the will of Allah, the Prophet ‘Isa (as) will return to Earth, the blessed Mahdi will appear, and by means of these holy personages the moral values of Islam will prevail across the entire world. This is something promised in the pages of the Qur’an. In verse 55 of Surat an-Nur, our Lord tells us: “Allah has promised those of you who have faith and do right actions that He will make them successors in the land as He made those before them successors, and will firmly establish for them their religion with which He is pleased and give them, in place of their fear, security.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO LIVE LONGER

Turkish daily Radikal, 21 April 2002

… The ‘Industrial revolution’ in the late 19th century and scientific advances led to extraordinary progress in the field of medicine in the last century. This has prolonged human life expectancy by 50% … The frontiers of middle age have been put back from 40-50 to 60-70. As we enter the new millennium it has emerged that certain diseases are caused by defects in genes, themselves the secret of life. Biotechnological progress is now at the point of being able to rectify gene defects.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HUMAN LIFE EXPECTANCY?

Turkish daily Hürriyet, 18 March 2004

According to some scientists, children born today will be able live up the age of 150, and some are of the opinion that there is no limit to human life expectancy. Human life expectancy regularly increases by 2 years every decade. This means that in 2150 the average life expectancy will be 122.5, and people aged 150 will be regarded as quite normal. There are currently some 40,000 people aged over 100 in the USA, although the number was only around 2,300 in the 1950s. James Vaupel, from the Max Planck Demographic Research Institute in Rostock in Germany, suggests that the number of centenarians will double in developed countries every 10 years. http://webarsiv.hurriyet.com.tr/2004/03/18/429832.asp

Turkish magazine Tempo, 25 June 2004

Human life expectancy has almost doubled since the end of the 19th century.
It is estimated that human life expectancy will increase still further thanks to advances in genetic medicine. A study by the medical journal Anti-Aging asked 60 experts in the field to estimate the life expectancy of a child born in 2100. The majority of the experts responded “at least 100 year,” while some said that life expectancy could reach 150 or even 200 years.

The Discovery of Solar Cookers

He will catch a bird flying in the air and roast it under the Sun.. (1)

In the above hadith reported from the Prophet (saas), our attention is drawn to “hunted prey being immediately able to be cooked and eaten” in the time of the Dajjal. Another aspect of these descriptions is that this will take place “in a sunny environment.” These statements in the hadith may be referring to the “solar cookers” that are used with modern-day technology. And Allah knows best.

Thanks to the solar cookers that are manufactured as an alternative to LPG, natural gas, electricity, wood and coal, even foods such as meat can be immediately cooked and eaten under the Sun.

As shown in the picture, solar rays are focused on the cooker thanks to the bright interior surfaces. Food placed inside the oven cooks in the high temperatures released by the reflected solar ray. (2)

The descriptions referring to the End Times are highly applicable to our own time.

Clouds of Smoke

The Dajjal will say, "I am the Lord of the worlds... It is by my leave that this Sun follows its course, if you wish, I can halt its progress!” They will respond by asking him to halt it. At this he will imprison the Sun, and will make a day resemble a month and a week a year. (Reported from Nu’aym ibn Hammad and Hakim ibn Mas'ud (ra)) (Signs of Qiyamah, 10th edition, p. 219, 220)

One of the hadith of our Prophet (saas) refers to the Dajjal imprisoning the Sun. Today, smoke clouds can be formed using a variety of different techniques, by means of which the sunlight can be blocked out. The smoke bombs used to create such clouds were used in the First and Second World Wars. These shrouded the sky, blocked off all sound and prevented the detection of planes and parachutists. This artificial measure, the blocking out of the Sun’s rays, appears to be in close agreement with the imprisoning of the Sun referred to in the hadith. And Allah knows best.

The Dajjal Will Bring Uneducated, Ignorant People under His Sway

According to the indications in the hadiths and statements by Islamic scholars, the worst corruption caused by the Dajjal will be the spreading of atheism, leading to anarchy and conflict. The system of the Dajjal will employ materialism and Darwinism to encourage people towards denial, irreligion and immorality. As noted in the hadiths, the materialist propaganda of the system of the Dajjal will mainly influence uneducated, ignorant people.

This aspect of the Dajjal is described as follows:

(The Dajjal) will particularly be able to deceive women and ignorant peasants... (Signs of Qiyamah, p. 216)

Looking at countries such as China, the Soviet Union, North Korea and some South American nations, in which communist revolutions took place in the recent past, we can see that the prediction in this hadith has indeed become a reality. Communist leaders have generally indoctrinated and misled people living in rural or mountainous areas, with low levels of education or none at all, leading to enormous corruption. Lenin instigated uprising among the Russian serfs and Mao among Chinese peasants, while Castro carried out his uprising in rural and forest areas by influencing the people inhabiting them. Communist guerrilla movements are still active in rural areas in North Korea and some South American countries. It is noteworthy that the communist, separatist, terrorist organization in Turkey concentrates its efforts in mountainous areas, trying to deceive the uneducated inhabitants. However, the people in the region possess foresight and knowledge, which allows them to increasingly see that this separatist terror group is actually atheistic in structure, and thus will avoid being used by these terrorists.

A Person’s Voice Speaking To Him

I swear to Allah, in whose power my life is, that Doomsday will not take place until savage animals talk to human beings, until a person’s voice and shoes speak to him, and until people tell him what they are doing.”

(Imam Sha’rani, Death, Doomsday, Resurrection, p. 471 )

With the cassette and CD players widely used today it is possible to record a person’s voice and listen to it later. The reference to “a person’s voice speaking to him” is suggestive of these devices. The expression “until a person’s shoes speak to him” puts one in mind of the listening devices that intelligence officers conceal in their footwear. Listening devices installed inside shoe heels and developed by Romanian intelligence during the Cold War were used by Western diplomats.

The reference to “people telling him what they are doing” may indicate how families and friends a long way away establish communications using internet cameras and video telephones.”

“A shoe and a telephone”

“Doomsday will not take place until the handle of a whip, his shoe lace speak to a person, until there is such abundance that a person will find nobody to give alms to, until rivers and streams flow through Arab lands.”

Sound receiver installed in a shoe heel

The reference to “a person’s shoe lace speaking” in the above account indicates the shoe lace serving as an antenna in surveillance systems installed in footwear.

The term “until the handle of a whip speaks to a person” may again be a reference to modern technology’s wireless and mobile phones resembling whips. The use of wireless and mobile phones whose antenna are not unlike the tips of whips bears a close similarity to the term “until the handle of a whip speaks to a person.”

THE FLOWING OF RIVERS THROUGH ARAB LANDS

The term “until rivers and streams flow through Arab lands” refers to desert agriculture using large quantities of water on the present-day Arabian Peninsula, and particularly in countries such as Israel and Saudi Arabia.

OTHER SIGNS...

It is reported from Ibn al-Munadi (ra) that:

"He will hold the clouds in his right hand, extend to where the Sun sets, walk on the ocean, and yet the water will come only up to his heels… There will be smoke in front of him and a green mountain behind… He will issue such a cry that all those between the earth and the skies will hear it... He will command the soil and it will grow crops... " (Signs of Qiyamah, 10th edition, p. 219)

He will hold the clouds in his right hand...

This hadith reported from the Prophet (saas) refers to the Dajjal holding “the clouds in his right hand.” This may be a reference to airplanes capable of reaching the uppermost levels of the atmosphere. Planes ascend to the level of the clouds and make it possible for human beings to reach them. This technology seems to be connected to the words of the hadith regarding the Dajjal “holding the clouds in his right hand.” And Allah knows best.

He will extend to where the Sun sets...

The reference in the hadith to the Dajjal extending “to where the Sun sets,” may well be significant in terms of modern technology. Sunset can be observed all over the world using technological devices such as telescopes and satellites. Satellite systems can provide images of all countries, and these can then be watched all over the planet on the Internet. The reference in the hadith to the Dajjal “extending to where the Sun sets” may be pointing to the satellite system in question. And Allah knows best.

He will walk on the ocean, and yet the water will come only up to his heels...

Our Prophet (saas) tells us that the Dajjal “will walk on the ocean, yet the water will come only up to his heels.” This description may well be a reference to present-day sports such as surfing, water-skiing, kite surfing, or barefoot water-skiing. People who engage in these sports move over the surface of the water, touching it only with their feet. The reference in the hadith to the Dajjal walking on the water, and the water coming only up to his heels, may well be an indication of these sports. And Allah knows best.

There will be smoke in front of him and a green mountain behind...

The reference in the hadith to “smoke in front of him, and a green mountain behind,” bears a close resemblance to the picture established by modern-day airplanes in the sky. As the illustration makes clear, as they fly an image forms of a cloud of smoke in front of them, and one of a mountain covered in greenery behind.

He will issue such a cry that all those between the earth and the skies will hear it...

The hadith also refers to the Dajjal issuing such a cry that all those between the earth and the skies will hear it. Modern advances such as radio, television and the Internet can broadcast across the world by means of satellites and radio waves, and everyone in all countries can now listen to the same broadcast at exactly the same time. This technological system, representing a single broadcast or voice, may well correspond to the hadith’s description of everyone in heaven and earth hearing the same thing. And Allah knows best.

He will command the soil and it will grow crops...

The hadith also refers to the Dajjal “commanding the soil to grow crops.” The different kinds of agricultural machinery and the various sizes of tractor available today make harvesting a simple matter. Similarly, fertilizer and irrigation technologies mean that crops grow very quickly. Using these technologies the land can be sown and made highly productive, and this agrees with the description in the hadith. And Allah knows best.
